This department, while based in Japan, works closely with locations in various countries to promote legal compliance, risk management, and duty optimization in import and export operations.
Through collaboration with customs authorities and relevant government agencies, the department supports business activities while achieving both efficiency in global logistics and compliance.
Job Description
In this position, as a Senior Customs & Trade Compliance Officer, you will drive global customs and trade compliance activities with a primary focus on Japan.
You will lead customs-related operations and projects across a wide range of areas, including CBU, CKD, production and service parts, and returnable packaging materials, while supporting each business function in carrying out operations in compliance with local laws and internal standards.
You will also serve as a key point of contact with customs authorities and related regulatory bodies, identifying and sharing risks and opportunities to support business operations.
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for developing global customs related activities (e.g. CBU, CKD, production/service part, returnable packaging, non-production parts) with key focus on Japan to the following activities
- licensing requirements
- HS classification
- FTA utilization
- customs incentives/privileges
- export controls
- sanctions and embargoes
This is to identify risks and prevent damages related to the customs laws of countries where the company operates.Manage and monitor an implementation of customs related projects to ensure that business units conduct their activities in line with local legislations, corporate regulations, processes and guidelines.
Support customs post audit/investigation and enquiries from Japanese competent authorities. Escalate customs incidents to Management and Customs and Trade team as necessary.
Serve as a liaison between a company and customs authority and communicate with internal and external functions for identifying potential opportunities, risks and liabilities.
Build strong relationships with Commercial, Finance, Legal, Transport Operation and customs brokers to manage trade compliance and tax risks.
Monitor and update regulatory changes that could impact planning for customs related requirements in Japan and clearly communicate those changes to related stakeholders. And represent UD Trucks in professional trade bodies and ensure that the business is updated on the latest regulations.
Assist the team to create written standard operating procedures, training materials and other presentations as well as conduct customs and trade trainings to internal functions.

Required Qualifications
・At least 3 years of practical experience in trade compliance or import/export operations
・Knowledge of customs valuation, HS classification, FTA utilization, export control, and sanctions compliance, as well as data analysis skills using tools such as Excel and Power BI
・Business-level proficiency in both Japanese and English
Preferred Qualifications
・Experience in the automotive industry or manufacturing industry
・Experience working for a customs broker or consulting firm
・Experience in trade operations within the APAC region
